At The Journey and The Process, we strive to provide holistic care, addressing the mind, body, and spirit to support individuals on their path to healing. One of the most impactful approaches we’ve added to our services is biblical counseling. Below, we explain what this type of counseling is and why we believe it is a vital part of our mission.
What is Biblical Counseling?
Biblical counseling is a form of counseling rooted in Christian principles, offering guidance that aligns with Scripture. It seeks to address life’s challenges by exploring how biblical truths apply to an individual’s circumstances, encouraging spiritual growth and practical life change. According to the Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation (CCEF), it emphasizes a deep reliance on God’s wisdom as revealed in the Bible, recognizing that true healing often involves reconciling with God’s plan for one’s life.
Unlike therapy that focuses primarily on psychological frameworks, biblical counseling integrates faith as a cornerstone of healing. It provides a space for clients to explore how their faith intersects with their emotions, relationships, and personal struggles. In our practice, biblical counseling is both trauma and clinically informed. While our biblical counselor and life coach team are not licensed, they are well aware of how trauma impacts the mind, body, and soul. We do not spiritually bypass clients. We do not minimize harm that has been done by abusive individuals or systems (including churches). Our biblical counseling and coaching team also understands some clinical concepts, like using somatic practice, to help deepen their work with the clients. Additionally, our biblical counseling and coaching team can partner with our licensed clinical team to provide truly holistic care for clients.
Why We Added Biblical Counseling
As the premier Complex Trauma and Coercive Control Specialists, we’ve seen firsthand how integrating spiritual care with evidence-based therapeutic practices can foster profound healing. Here’s why we chose to incorporate biblical counseling:
- Addressing the Whole Person
Many of our clients value their faith as a source of strength and direction. Incorporating biblical counseling allows us to more deeply address not just emotional and physical trauma but also spiritual struggles that often co-occur, offering a truly whole-person approach to healing. - Reconnecting with Core Beliefs
Trauma often disrupts or destroys an individual’s relationship with their faith. Biblical counseling provides a safe environment to explore these disruptions and to rebuild a sense of trust and connection with God. - Fostering Hope and Resilience
The Bible offers timeless wisdom and hope, even in life’s most challenging seasons. By integrating these principles into counseling, we can help clients develop a resilient mindset rooted in faith. - Meeting Client Requests
Many of our clients have expressed a desire for deeper faith-based guidance alongside our clinical therapy offerings. Some clients also don’t need clinical therapy and are instead looking to explore their faith and heal in a biblical counseling and discipleship setting. Biblical counseling allows us to honor these requests and tailor our services to their needs.
How Biblical Counseling Works at Our Practice
In our practice, biblical counseling is a stand-alone service and can also be woven into clinical sessions at the client’s request. For example:
- Sessions may include scripture reflection to provide clarity on challenges.
- Counselors may guide clients in prayer or spiritual practices that align with their personal faith journey.
- Discussions explore how biblical principles can help address areas of personal growth, relationships, unresolved emotional struggles, and help clients connect or reconnect to God after traumatic experiences.
This approach is optional and customized to the individual’s comfort and spiritual background.
