You’re sitting in your office. One of your congregants comes in for her appointment and starts pouring out her story. “My marriage is a mess. He is so mean to me and nothing I seem to do is right! I try and try and he just never seems pleased with me. I’m trying to be a good wife! Please help me!” You realize you’re hearing what could be elements of a power and control dynamic. You think, “Oh man. Could there be some domestic abuse/coercive control here?” Then you think, “I’m not equipped for this! I don’t know enough! Do we have any policies?” Or your congregant comes in and says, “I need to talk about some things that happened to be in childhood…. I was raped…” Her voice trails off as she looks to see your reaction. You think, “Oh God help! I didn’t learn about trauma in seminary! How can I help this sweet sister in Christ?!”
