Why a Faith-based Women’s Trauma Recovery Group?
You’ve been through some horrible stuff. You’re on the other side, but you feel shattered and are sorting through the rubble to find some semblance of self. It feels like you’ve experienced death – and you did – some part of you feels like it died. And unlike other losses, no one brought you a casserole or held your hand. In fact, maybe those who should have been holding your hand and providing comfort were the ones who did the harm. You don’t even know how to make sense of it all. And then there’s the isolation. It’s so hard to relate to folks who don’t get it. You feel like you spend the majority of your time trying to explain what it’s like for you. Half the time you don’t even understand it! All you want to do is heal, not be an educator.
Trauma and it’s effects on our bodies, souls, and minds quite frankly sucks. We get it and we want to help you recover and find community.
The Faith-based Women’s Trauma Recovery Group is an online, educational support group designed to help survivors understand and process trauma.
In this group you’ll learn new skills, reinforce skills learned, build community, and find healing in the aftermath of devastation. And, because the group takes place online you can be anywhere in the world as long as you have WiFi.
What will I learn?
Our material breaks down the trauma journey into nine steps. You’ll learn the science of trauma, trauma recovery skills, boundary setting and tools for managing anxiety and depression. You also get to practice these skills so you regain trust in your judgement and ability to make decisions. While you do all that, you’ll be in community and connected to the group. Trauma happens in relationship and it heals in relationship. We create a safe space for connection with others who truly get it.
Why faith-based?
For many of our group members faith guides their steps, but we also know that faith can be used to harm – and that is the case for many who attend our group. We have found that women want a space where they can engage in discussion that includes faith as they wrestle with what happened to them. They long for a place where they can ask questions and not get spiritually bypassed. They long to be able to grieve with others who understand. We want to be a place that allows that. You don’t have to be a Christian to join this group. You also don’t have to know what you believe to join it, either. We welcome you as you are. While we’ll talk about trauma from the Christian perspective, we promise you it’s not trite, legalistic, and we do not minimize spiritual abuse that you may have experienced.
Who is a good fit?
The group welcomes women over 18 in most stages of recovery. This group is not for women who are easily dysregulated, as the material we cover can be triggering. We welcome survivors from violent crimes, family trauma, abuse of all kinds (including spiritual abuse – this group is not preachy and we do not spiritually bypass pain), and natural disasters.
Who is not a good fit?
Women who have have recently exited the trauma and who struggle with emotion regulation, as well as anyone experiencing active suicidal ideation. This material can be triggering and we want you to be able to engage with it safely.
