You’re overwhelmed and you’ve seen some things.
You came into this career because you wanted to help, but you weren’t as clear on the toll it would take on you and your relationships over time. You’re struggling to prioritize your own well-being – at least that’s what your spouse said – while providing essential services to the community. In fact, you just asked yourself, “What is well-being?” and laughed as you chugged your fifth energy drink of the shift. Half the time you feel dead inside. You know you aren’t good, but it feels like everyone is a threat. You probably should talk to somebody, but you for sure don’t want to feel patronized. You need someone who gets it. You need someone who gets those long hours, mandatory overtime, and dangerous incidents and understand how they can take a toll on your mental and physical health, often leading to issues like depression, relationship problems, substance abuse, and even suicidal thoughts.
I’m Mirelle Chateigne, Clinical Resident Intern & Wake Forest Trauma Therapist, & I get it. I’d love to help you.
